THE REALISTS

After looking back at Tim’s lecture on Fashion Photography and Fashion Photographers, I wanted to research into this further and do a blog post on this genre of photographers.

REBEL + ACTIVE

The first photographer was Terry Richardson, an artist that focuses on realistic subject matters that borders on rebellious and activity. He focuses on flash realism and high aggressiveness and sexuality, making it rebellious this way. He focuses greatly on the use of harsh, artificial light whilst conveying a narrative, he uses celebrity models quite frequently also.

The next photographer is Wolfgang Tillmans, fortunately, I have seen one of his exhibitions in the Tate Modern in February 2017 and found him as an artist, fascinating. His images focus on extremely natural realism and have a sense of nostalgia and a relatable aspect to them. The choice and casting process of his models make or break his images, personally, he always uses models who are relatable yet have a certain edge to them. Tillmans is an extremely opinionated artist, he even has a whole campaign relating to “anti-brexit” which portrays interesting ideas. Here are some of the images I took at the exhibition I saw plus some of his imagery / campaigning:

The next photographer is Nan (Nancy) Goldin, she is an American photographer who focuses on realistic issues and portrays her thoughts through imagery. She explores the LGBT movement, the HIV crisis and moments of intimacy in her artwork. Her work is very much about attitude and voice and getting her opinion out to the public. She explores public taboos and uses her own trauma and experiences to create art, this is an image of herself a month after being battered which she exhibited:
